Partial Lockdown Week 14

Partial Lockdown Day 89

Game Development

So, I had a hard time sleeping last night because I kept thinking about this new game I’m working on. I have ideas for it, although they won’t be easy to pull off. As soon as I was up and drinking my coffee I was doing more research on things I want to do. All this thinking about it has fleshed out the idea more though, so that’s good.

Work

Started at my usual time this morning. First was checking on a house after guest departure. Everything was good there, except they left an AC running. Next up was to drop off some boxes for the intern. After that was a stop at another nearby house to give it the usual Monday walkthrough. Finally, I hit up the house on the hill for an extended walkthrough. Sent the owner some videos, he’s happy.

Game Development Continued

Then I spent the rest of the day working on this new game idea. It took a while to get the little bits working that I wanted to, but it’s pretty good. I’ve got a sphere you can control, a camera that follows it, and some other balls you can throw (sort of). There’s more to it than that and there’s a lot more I want to do, but it’s a start!

Partial Lockdown Day 90 (Tuesday)

Work

Got the handyman off doing his work while I spent my day on bills. I started by reaching out to the local office of our ISP. The office isn’t open anymore, but there’s still someone here working, and a place to drop off payments. So I need to get the totals due for all our houses to write a check to drop off. Of course, things don’t always go as planned.

First, the housekeeper needed more supplies and intern doesn’t plan on going by there until much later. So off to the grocery store for supplies. Then I dropped them off and got the water working at the house. After that, I swung by to pay off the electricity bill. Still nothing back from the ISP, so water was next. Of course, no new bills there, oh well.

Game Development

One issue with using Bolt is that most tutorials I set aside to use require translating from script to Bolt. Or, instead I can just look for tutorials built around Bolt! So I started watching a tutorial about a drag and drop system built using Bolt. Of course, what I want isn’t exactly what the tutorial covers, but nothing ever is.

Work Continued

As is usually the case, I was interrupted with more work. This time was for a call with my Google Ads consultant. I guess they have a new ad model they want to push, as well as improving performance in general. I figure I might as well, it wasn’t too bad. Then, I had to go digging through the filing cabinet looking for paperwork that wasn’t there for a homeowner we no longer support. I’m sure this will end up with me doing something.

Game Development Continued

Once I was done dealing with all kinds of work stuff (and even while still dealing with more work stuff) I continued on the game. I’m working on an inventory and hotbar system. They’re going to be fairly similar in function, so I figure I’ll work on them both at the same time a little bit. It’s working with UI stuff, which I’m still not very good with.

Partial Lockdown Day 91 (Wednesday)

Work

First was checking on the housekeeper. Seems the guests left some sort of pants, or shorts, or underwear, or something they want back. So I told the housekeeper to keep an eye out. Then I got to run around collecting water from our villas to get tested. Once I ran around to all six houses I brought them to the water department and dropped ’em off.

Game Development

I jumped back into the tutorials I was working from. Well, it was just one that I kinda left off on. Finished it up, but there’s no follow-up video in his playlist to keep going on the topic! I’m sure I can figure it out based on other tutorials I have saved, but those aren’t built around Bolt. Basically, at this point I’m needing to get a click and drag thing working for stuff like inventory. I’ll get there, just probably not today.

More Work

A day isn’t complete around here without something random popping up out of nowhere. I’m sure I can leave it up to the intern, but she’s supposed to be on vacation. I actually haven’t heard from her about this though, so I might as well pop in. There’s a last minute virtual meeting with some group about the reopening. They say it’s important to attend because critical information will be shared.

As is true BVI fashion, people didn’t start showing up to the meeting until the actual start time. Luckily, they didn’t start the actual meeting too late, only a few minutes. There actually was a bit of useful information, but there was also a lot of answers full of guesswork. The roommate actually attended, so I didn’t need to be there. Honestly, I could probably have skipped the meeting.

Partial Lockdown Day 92 (Thursday)

Work

I did my best to do as little work as possible today since it’s Thanksgiving. But that doesn’t stop people from making last minute requests. I had to run down to unlock on house before I had breakfast. Then later I needed to head out and get that receipt from a couple weeks ago. Luckily, the guy was in this week.

Game Development

I didn’t take as much time today to work on the game as I should. I dove back into the drag and drop tutorial but barely made it as far as adding a couple of images. I’m not feeling the game development at the moment.

Partial Lockdown Day 93 (Friday)

Pools

Added an extra pool today. We’ve got long-term tenants moving into a house with a pool that I don’t usually service. But the normal guy called in someone else who either did a really bad job or just didn’t do it. So I gave it a bit of a vacuum and got it looking better. Once that was done I did my usual rounds. Nothing too much at the house on the hill, the easy house, or the old house. I did give my nemesis a thorough vacuum, but it wasn’t too bad either.

Game Development

Then I dove back into the 3D game. I continued the tutorial series on dragging and dropping, which I’ve worked with a few times. I’m about two thirds of the way through the series. I can easily drag and drop things from one place to another now, which is good. Although, I realize it might not really be what I want. We’ll have to see how this whole thing shapes up.

Partial Lockdown Day 94 (Saturday)

Accounting

I’ve kind of designated Saturdays as my accounting day. I collect stuff to enter through the week then enter it all at once. I mean I can always do it more often if I want or even put it off for another day but one week’s worth of accounting only takes a short while. Today I got started a little early on my month-end stuff. I entered a whole bunch of spending and whatnot. Got my pool service expenses charged to the villa owners. There’s only a few more days left in the month, so if there’s no more checks written, or money spent, I’ve got that all done.

Game Development

Most of today’s work was going over the last tutorial video and trying to find a decent way to implement enums in Bolt without code. I failed so I just created a new class to do it, and I’ll just stick new enums in there when I need them. I didn’t exactly get anything done because I was playing around with enums to see how they work in Bolt.

Partial Lockdown Day 95 (Sunday)

Game Development

With a day off you’d think I’d spend more time working on my game(s). Well, I did get through the third and final tutorial on drag and drop. I’ve now got it working in this new game I’m doing in Bolt. It took a bit of extra work to do it using visual scripting. I’m sure there’s some stuff I could have done easier. But it works, which is what I want. Of course, I need to go about customizing it more now. So much more to do on the game too.

This week’s featured image is a throwback to my first Thanksgiving on the island since I didn’t really have one this year. It was quite a feast!
