Tropical Waves and WordPress

Morning

All weekend there have been reports that we should expect not one, but two tropical waves. In case you don’t know (I didn’t until I moved here) a tropical wave usually means a lot of rain, sometimes flooding. So far, nothing. No major rains, sure, maybe a light sprinkle here and there, but nothing concerning.

This morning though . . . the sky was dark and foreboding. We skipped out on our walk again, just in case the weather decided to turn. But no, no rain here. Once again, the sun is shining bright and there’s no sign of the tropical waves we’d been expecting.

Of course, now that the (non)weather has passed, I’m kicking myself for not getting a picture of the clouds. It would have made a nice header image for this post and they did look pretty cool.

I’ve also decided I need to get the company WordPress site under control. Right now, almost none of the images there are optimized for the web. So, I’ve got ShortPixel running through my media library that consists hundreds of images. It says it’s going to take a couple hours, a few of the images are failing, likely due to the original sizes of the images.

I’m pretty sure that the test site is about ready to go live, I’m just trying to decide if I want to spend the money upgrading to the pro version of the theme I’m using. I think the site looks good as it is, but there’s a couple features the pro version has that would make it better.

As to this site, GoDaddy still hasn’t finished installing my SSL Certificate. It’s been nearly 3 days now and I still can’t use the HTTPS protocol. They said it could take up to 72 hours to complete, so I hope that means it’ll be done today. I’ve been waiting for it to be done before do any kind of announcement about the site.

I’ve decided I will eventually get around to adding a lot more content to this site in time. I’d like to create a page dedicated to my pets. I mean, I’ve had this website forever and it’s always been kinda crappy, no reason not to put some meaningful content here to stay.

Afternoon

Before lunch, we swung by the condo at Old Yard. We stopped in to take all the linens because the sale is about to close so we won’t have any more guests staying.

Next was a delicious burger at Mermaids and Pirates. While there I tweaked today’s blog post on the company website then shared it on Facebook. I’m hoping it will be received well.

I did spend some time more working on this site too. I’ve decided I’m going to add a recipe section at some point in the future. I’ve added Cooked, a recipe plugin for WordPress, so you can look forward to seeing my favorite dishes and desserts soon.

I then spent the rest of the afternoon trying to find some new WordPress themes to test out for the company site. Turns out the paid theme I was interested in won’t do what I was hoping. Why is it so hard to find the theme I want? So many nice looking themes out there, but I just can’t find one that contains all the elements I want.

My ideal layout would be a nice slider in the header with sidebar on the right that will hold a widget. That’s it, that’s all I really want. Wouldn’t hurt if I could have it to do some parallax too. Maybe I should just get a simple theme with a header menu, and then customize the home page itself to contain all the other elements. I think maybe tomorrow I’ll give that a try.

Evening

After spending so much time working with WordPress, I decided it was time to call it a day. Mixed myself another Dark ‘n’ Stormy and headed off to my room for more television and YouTube.

Spoiler warning

The 100 was as good as always, although a few of the characters really bug me this season. So many stupid decisions written just for the story. I hope that if the characters actually had to face these choices they would be smarter about it.

Thank God Clark finally pulled her head out of her ass! I thought I was going to have to keep suffering through her “I have to keep Maddie safe at all costs” garbage forever. I can’t wait to see what the young Commander pulls off.

Clark isn’t there only one making better decisions either. Octavia’s selflessness was surprising, although it really didn’t feel natural. I really loved the cavalry showing up there at the end! Although, you just know that explosion likely closed off the gorge.

/Spoiler

Once again, I ended the night with a few videos on YouTube. I sincerely enjoy the content Vintagebeef makes and still really enjoy most of his Minecraft videos.
