Back to Work (Monday)

Work

A little early today. Tried running a credit card but it was declined. Payment was made through other avenues. I went out and got a lot done, didn’t have much option though since the internet was out across the island. Even cell service was affected. Was down for like an hour or more. The main fiber line was damaged or something. I checked on a couple villas, I got keys made for one, picked up supplies for work tomorrow, and even got some pool chemicals. I did check up on the last thing I need for my work permit but it’s still not ready.

Restocking

Went by a couple stores, got a couple onions and some asparagus. Not a whole lot else available, they really need to restock soon. I did find a pizza pan and candy thermometer though! I was so happy and excited about that.

Gardening

I’ve killed all my tomato plants. They’ve all been doing really badly, bugs, tiny tomatoes, etc. So I’m going to start over. One plant in a bigger pot, should hopefully do the trick. I also have some fertilizer I can use to make sure the soil is good. Just gotta get the seeds started.

Game Development

Even though I haven’t been in the mood recently I decided to at least do something. I jumped back into the 3D game and modified one flow graph to randomize it a little bit. There’s more I should do, so much more. But I just can’t bring myself to work on it too much. I just have to get back into the habit of forcing myself to spend at least a tiny amount of time everyday working in Unity.

Cooking

Having a candy thermometer allows me to make caramel, so I did! I kinda messed up cooking it because I’m not great with these burners. The butter didn’t fully mix in with everything else, but the caramel is still so delicious. I can’t seem to stop eating it, it’s so good!

Tuesday

Curfew

This isn’t exactly curfew, but close enough. . . Two things, one being that the proposed opening of the seaport for travelers has been pushed back nearly two months! This means that all the people who had planned to come in via ferry from USVI are now scrambling to find flights, including guests that we have coming this weekend!

Second, we’ve now had our first tourists test positive for COVID-19. . . Supposedly, they’ve been isolating on their boat this whole time, but from the sound of things it’s possible there’s been a small amount of mingling. So this means right around Christmas we might just see a spike in cases, and possibly another lockdown. . . .

Work

An early start again today. This time it was so I could be on the other side of the island at 9am. Met up with the intern and the handyman at a house I’ve never seen before. Got the handyman working and had a look around to figure out what we’ll need when the housekeepers come by. Luckily, I won’t have to deal too much with this house since the intern has the keys and lives closer.

Game Development

Didn’t take a whole lot of time today for the game. I jumped back into the 3D game and worked on the pathfinding a bit. Mostly I just moved what little pathfinding I had created and turned it into a new super macro. That way I can use it on other objects and tweak it as needed without having to rewrite a bunch of other macros.

Cooking

For dinner this evening I made fresh tomato soup and a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches. The soup turned out marvelously! I made it from my own home-grown tomatoes and basil. Of course, I don’t have any more tomatoes, but I was so very happy with how it turned out that I might just buy some tomatoes and make it again while my new tomato plant grows. I’ve begun writing up my recipe but I’ll have to make the soup again. Then I’ll come back another time to finish the recipe and publish it.

Wednesday

Power

Power went out last night, not sure exactly when but it was while I was trying to sleep. Happened sometime around 10pm I think. Didn’t come back until around 2am. It was so hot without the fans. I just lay there sweating while trying to sleep. I’m so tired. . . Wow, seems some people are still without power.

Work

Last night, right before bed, the intern messaged me that one of our owners was questioning his October report. So I went and looked into it, ran a report in QuickBooks, and sent an email off to the roommate about it. I do so wish he hadn’t waited so long to question it. My memory has never been all that good. . .

Cooking

Now that I’ve finally found a proper pizza pan I decided to make one for dinner! I’m still having issues shaping the dough ball after rising. And I’m not sure I’m doing a good enough job with the kneading. The pizza turned out really good though. It was onion, bacon, sausage, and pepperoni. I ate half for dinner tonight, have the other half leftover for tomorrow. And I have another ball of dough to make another whole pizza sometime later.

Thursday

Work

Another early start because the intern forgot about getting supplies for the housekeepers. I had to run out before breakfast to buy cleaning stuff, then met up with the intern to hand it off. Luckily, she’s making the drive to the other side of the island to drop off. Of course, there’s all the other work I have to today. So after a bit I ran out to get some stuff done. I stopped at the hardware store to get more keys made and bought some salt. Dropped off a check nearby, the headed to my nemesis to check the new internet install.

Game Development

Again, I didn’t get get to spend as long as I would have liked, but I’ve got more work into the game. This isn’t more of the same, but implementing a new system in the game. I didn’t get it done yet though because I was interrupted.

Power

Just as I was reheating my pizza in the oven the power went out! I was watching a movie too, luckily the laptop had power enough to keep me watching. But my oven just doesn’t work when there’s no power. At least it had a bit of heat before it died. The pizza didn’t end up as hot as I like, but it was still tasty. At least the power was back on in less than an hour.

Pool Day (Friday)

Pools

Put in some extra work today. And it was raining. . . I started off at the house on the hill. The pool is still doing pretty damned good so there wasn’t a whole lot of work to do there. Then it was on to the easy pool, which I was going to completely vacuum. In the end, I did a half-assed job because it started pouring rain and the pole wasn’t cooperating! Don’t get me wrong, the pool looks fine, but I just didn’t feel like fighting with it in the rain.

After that was my nemesis. I did something different there, I added salt! I’m hopeful that the chlorinator is actually working because it’s asked for more salt recently. After putting in the salt I gave it a full on vacuuming, to make sure it all dissolved properly. Once that was done I headed on to my old place, and did the same there, salt and all.

Game Development

I dove back in where I left off yesterday and finished most of what I was doing. There’s still another part that I need to do, but so far it’s actually working really well. I’ve added a slider to control the size of the spheres the player launches, and based on the size set, the player shrinks accordingly. All I need now is to make the player able to re-absorb the spheres.

Work

Then, as I was starting to relax and call it a day, the intern let’s me know we have a brand new booking, big one too, coming next Wednesday. Means I had to rush out and check on some stuff, meet a guy, rush to plan. Oh, but it’s not actually confirmed yet, there’s all the chance it will fall through. But we have to plan for it, so time to rush!

The booking is at my old place, for like six weeks. So, it’s a big deal if it happens. But that house still hasn’t been ready yet. Every time someone stays there, something new comes up. The repair job from the hurricane was rushed, and the owner still owes us so much money. This one booking will actually make a dent in his debt to us.

Saturday

Work

Headed out at my usual time. Had to open a villa up for a realtor to show. I just ran down there and unlocked the place, opened some blinds for light, and headed back home for more work.

Accounting

Then it was time to play catch up on accounting. I never did any last week for some reason, so I had a bunch to do. It really didn’t take too long, luckily. There was a few checks to enter, other expenses, guest payments, etc. I think I spent about an hour working on it.

Work Continued

Then the intern stopped by for a little while. She was prepping for an arrival. We went over a couple things about next week’s schedule, then she was off. In the afternoon I had to head out to lock up the house after the realtor was finished. While I was out I also picked up a trash can for the old place, and did some investigating there.

Cooking

Tonight I tried something different. Chicken and asparagus. It turned out pretty good, although it was a bit of a mashup between multiple recipes. I have a feeling next time I try something like this it will be even better.

Day Off (Sunday)

Work

Even with it being my day off, there was still a couple messages to/from the intern. Luckily it was nothing big and didn’t disturb too much.

Game Development

I took a bit of time today to dive back into the space game. I didn’t really do a whole lot, but I set up some stuff in preparation for more work. It has been sufficiently long enough since I worked on the game that I know have a good feel on what’s to come. Plus I’ve increased my skill and have new concepts to implement.

This week’s featured image is another throwback from two years ago. I found the pattern to be quite satisfying.
